Air fresheners and room sprays, we’ve all used them. It’s pretty much a given in every bathroom and household, not to mention those automatic pump dispensers at the office or in public buildings. But have you ever stopped to think about what you’re breathing in or that it’s settling into your hair, skin, and clothing?
Health Dangers Found in Common Room Sprays
In most air fresheners, including pet odor removers, plug ins, and car fresheners, the health impact of many of the chemicals used cause sneezing, coughing, headaches, congestion, endocrine disruption, and even cancer. They contain high levels of VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), like formaldehyde, acetone, petroleum, and benzene. ‘Volatile’ means any chemical that can evaporate easily, ‘organic’ means its’ structure is made up of carbon, and ‘compound’ is any chemical substance that is made up of two or more elements. Not only do you inhale these various components that are linked to illness and disease, they are absorbed into your skin and the lingering smell settles on your clothing and hair so you continue to breathe them in. Personal experience with headaches and sneezing the instant I spray an aerosol or common freshener prompted me to research the ingredients listed on the can. What a shock. I might as well sit down and inhale a can of paint.
What Ingredients Do We Use?
While it’s not realistic to think we can rid our lives of chemicals, especially since our own bodies are made up of chemical reactions that happen everyday, ignoring them and exposing ourselves to these harmful ingredients prevents us from building the foundation for good health. "Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own? You have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” -Corinthians 6:19-20. To honor this responsibility, we keep the ingredients for our products to a minimum and put the focus on health and healing by using the plants and oils God gave us.
Essential Oils
By definition, essential oils are VOC’s. The oils do evaporate easily, they are carbon based, and being mixtures made up of many components, they are compounds. However, they are pure extracts from plants that are not composed of the dozens of ingredients found in fragrance. While not harmful if used properly, essential oils have been used for centuries and are full of health benefits that are antioxidants and decrease inflammation and pain.
Alcohol
With a higher proof, alcohol will solubilize and act as a preservative, with no added odor. It prevents the growth of bacteria that can begin within days of formulation with water and it evenly dilutes the essential oils that are dispersed into the air, avoiding undiluted and sensitized droplets landing on your skin or fabrics.
Pentylene Glycol
An emulsion stabilizer that helps to solubilize elements, pentylene glycol is made from the pulp of sugar cane. It is sustainable, non irritating on the skin, and used in various cosmetics and spray mists.
Conclusion
While many air freshener products are now boasting no phthalates or parabens--which is good--they still contain things like tuolenes and benzene. Everyone’s sensitivity and tolerance level is unique, but opting for essential oils in a room spray is a healthier choice. Like anything, high concentrations in areas that are not ventilated, such as continuously running a diffuser and creating an off-gassing effect that can be symptomatic for some, is unsafe. A couple of pumps in the bathroom or throughout the house is a better alternative to add to the support of your health and healing.
