Saint Fiacre

If you've ever had

gardening woes or health challenges, praying to Saint Fiacre is a great place to start. He built a garden and shared his wisdom of plants to help heal people. Legend says, that when Saint Fiacre ran out of space, Saint Faro gave him all the land he needed to continue his work. Using his staff to turn the soil, he was miraculously able to clear all the trees and weeds as well, building an oratory in honor of Mary and serving the sick and the poor with his garden.

“Their fruit will serve as food, and their leaves will serve for healing.”

-Ezekiel 47:12

I can tell you from experience that trying to start a garden, much less keeping one, is hard work. Honestly, I never would have tried if it weren’t for the decision to eat more fruits and vegetables and trying to save money on eating organic. We did pretty well at first, but then we suddenly had so many animals in our backyard, it was a challenge to keep up with the squirrels, the birds, the cats, the skunks, and the raccoons...At least we had a fence to block off the alley. Otherwise, the deer would have made a home in our yard, too.

Eventually, I started planting herbs. Success! The only thing I could guess is that the aroma of the rosemary, mint, thyme, sage, and oregano were too much for their liking. So, not only did it help deter the animals, we now had the use of fresh herbs. But the oils from these herbs are not only fragrant and flavorful, they are anti inflammatory, help to soothe digestion, and calm both the body and the skin. In His Wisdom, God shared these resources with us, which allowed Saint Fiacre to serve the sick while helping people learn about Him and the healing power and beauty of His gifts.

August 30th Feast day of Saint Fiacre, patron saint of gardeners, vegetable growers, and medicinal plants.
