Reasons to Ditch the Perfume and Cologne

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), ingredients like limonene, musk ketone, and phthalates are skin irritants and toxic endocrine disruptors, which alter thyroid and metabolism function. Fragrance ingredients are not required to be disclosed on labels because they are considered trade secrets. Although, some do disclose their ingredients and you may find some of these dangerous ingredients listed on the bottle of your favorite (and expensive!) perfume or cologne and other household products you use.


To ditch the perfume or cologne, try this:

You will need:

  • 1 oz dropper bottle or small roll on bottle (you can get them at a craft store for about $2)

  • carrier oil—you can use olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, avocado oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil (you can find them in a health food store or in the health and beauty aisles in retail stores)

  • essential oils of your choice (you can find them in health food stores or order online and depending on which scent you choose and the size of bottle, they can typically range from $8 up to $60 or more. Just make sure you’re buying from a company that provides documentation on what’s in it and where it came from)

  • measuring spoons

  • mini funnel (you can get them at a craft store for under $5)

If using a 1 oz dropper bottle:

  1. A small dropper bottle holds 1 oz or about 6 tsp but you want to leave room for the essential oils, so pour 5 tsp of carrier oil into the bottle.

  2. Add 25 drops total of your favorite essential oil(s).

  3. Drop onto wrists and gently rub in, adding some behind the ears.


If using a small roll on bottle:

  1. A small roll on bottle holds 1/3 oz or about 2 tsp but you want to leave room for the essential oils, so pour 1-3/4 tsp of carrier oil into the bottle.

  2. Add 8 drops total of your favorite essential oil(s).

  3. Roll onto wrists and behind the ears.
